Marsden Year 7 School Camp June 2011

...The red claw seem to be growing rapidly over the past few months and are thick in numbers and the next group to enjoy the experience of catching them were the Year 7 students and teachers of Marsden State School who had Sports Tuition conduct their school camp for them at Camp Lake Fire. The Marsden camp was survivor themed and held over four days. It’s a great time frame for a camp because nothing is rushed. It gives everyone the chance to hit the water and have a good fish and to also set some red claw traps, which was part of the canoeing activity for this camp. There were a few monster yellowbelly caught, with the biggest taken on the final day when my camera was sent around to take a few snaps of the other activities. How often does that happen? Too often is my answer! It’s similar to leaving your camera at home. You know there are always going to be great fish caught that day. The group was split into four tribes and being survivor themed, points were allocated for each fish. Most tribes caught just under 40 fish each, which was a pretty good effort. All fish were returned to the water, except for one which ended up having a hook well down its throat, so it was decided it would make a good vegetarian meal for a couple of students.

The Marden students also participated in abseiling, archery and shelter building. The students also love sitting around an open fire and doing a bit of cooking. Over the four days, they cooked sausages, fried rice, bacon and egg muffins and hamburger patties. They also enjoyed pasta meals from CJ’s Pasta on James Street in Fortitude Valley and they made their own pizzas one night as well with all the ingredients thanks to Sugo Mi on Oxford Street at Bulimba. The students really enjoyed making their pizza from scratch and with Camp Lake Fire’s wood fired pizza oven in full swing, it didn’t take long to feed the crew. Each night dessert was the same, but there never seems to be any complaints about toasting marshmallows over the open fire.
