Churchie Year 3 & 4 Father & Son Fishing Weekend May 2011

Even though the weather is starting to cool, the fishing has continued to be exceptional at Maroon Dam. There have been a couple of fishing groups enjoying the favourable conditions. The first group event was the Churchie Year 3 & 4 father and son fishing weekend. Churchie is an all boys school in Brisbane and are heavily involved in the Sports Tuition outdoor education programs through their school camps and also the fishing weekends, so it is always pleasing to see the boys catch plenty of fish. The fishing certainly was successful and there were some contributing factors as to why. It was a full moon and there was only a light breeze. These two elements combined will always ensure some very productive freshwater fishing sessions.

The Churchie boys and dads arrived at Camp Lake Fire at 8am and hit the water shortly after. At lunch, there was a quick knots and rigs and general freshwater fishing workshop to add some theory to why we approached the morning fishing session like the way we did, and to explain some other methods which could be employed to catch bass and yellowbelly apart from using live shrimp as bait. This provides some understanding to everyone and it also gives the group a little more independence before hitting the water for the afternoon session. There were plenty of fish caught throughout the day and some were filleted for dinner, to go with the copious amount of red claw that was also caught in the traps. The group was given the option to employ catch and release tactics or to keep their catch for dinner and most were keen for a taste of yellowbelly and Australian bass. The boys peeled potatoes for their chips, and together with a barbeque, red claw, and salad, it certainly presented as quite a feast for the Saturday night meal, which was followed by the boys toasting marshmallows for dessert.
